FORM FOLLOW FUNCTION - FUNCTION FOLLOW FORM (ii)

more about form follow function or function follow form

FORM FOLLOW FUNCTION - FUNCTION FOLLOW FORM

Form follows function is a principle associated with modern architecture and industrial design in the 20th century. The principle is that the shape of a building or object should be primarily based upon its intended function or purpose. What I understood from this phrase is that a design or a style or a shape of an object follows the function of the object. For an example, a chair's shape is designed according to the exact purpose of its existence. If the chair is built for people to have a quick nap, the chairs shape must be long enough to make the people feel comfortable and cosy. Another example is flat shoes. The shoes are designed flat to make sure to meet the function of the shoes which is to make the users to feel comfortable to walk around.

The basic rule for any design is “Form follows function.” If an object has to perform a certain function, its design must support that function to the fullest extent possible. This also goes for industrial design and even more for Web design. This rule is also equally important for web designers as well as architectural designers. A web designer must make sure the structure of a particular website suits the typical users of the website. The typical users can be the function here. But definitely the purpose the website was created is also very important. The typical user must feel comfortable and convenient in using the website.  The design and basic structure must be user friendly.

Then what is function follows shape? In this case, the shape plays a more dominent role in design than the function or purpose of the particular object. The shape of an object determines the function of the object. It might say that the object is first designed and then was experimented to explore more on the functions part.

Form
In print design, form is both the overall look and feel of the page as well as the shape and look of the individual components - the typefaces, the graphic elements, the texture of the paper. Form is also the format whether the piece is a poster, a tri-fold brochure, a saddle-stitched booklet, or a self-mailer newsletter.

Function
For designers, function is the practical, getting down to business part of the process of design and desktop publishing. Function is the purpose of the piece whether it is to sell, to inform or educate, to impress, or to entertain. It includes the copywriting message, the audience, and the cost of getting the project printed.

SELF DIGITIZATION

My first self digitization, LOL !
Well this is my first self digitization since I just learnt how to use Ai and PSD to vectorise these last few days ago.

I had some difficulty on the hair and the 'baju kurung' texture so I decided to change the texture to simple polkadots. And you can notice that the original picture is using earring while the digitization doesn't have it this is because it kind of hard to digitize earring. LOL

ENVIRONMENTAL SCULPTURE

What is Environmental Sculpture?
Environmental sculpture (wikipedia definition) usually creates or alters the environment for the viewer, as opposed to presenting itself figurally or monumentally before the viewer. A frequent trait of larger environmental sculptures is that one can actually enter or pass through the sculpture and be partially or completely surrounded by it. Also, in the same spirit, it may be designed to generate shadows or reflections, or to color the light in the surrounding area.

Examples of Environmental Sculpture:
First picture - The Singing Ringing Tree
Second picture – Lake Taupo
Third picture – Jeff koons bilbao garden

SCULPTURE

The lecturer asked us to draw those shapes above using 2 perspective view without using ruler.
Free hand rule okay !
And the result as shown below.

Thank goodness the lecturer like it ;)

Okay, seriously.. I don't really got it okay.
So, the conclusion is make new design with fresh ideas.
Coming soon ;)

DEFINITION

What is the definition of Environmental Design?

Environmental design is the process of addressing surrounding environmental parameters when devising plans, programs, policies, buildings, or products. Classical prudent design may have always considered environmental factors; however, the environmental movement beginning in the 1940s has made the concept more explicit.

Environmental design is often confused with ecodesign, also known as green design, but the two are not the same. Ecodesign is one aspect of environmental design, and addresses sustainability concerns, but environmental design is a much broader discipline that involves taking the surrounding environment into account when planning a design. Successfulenvironmental design is a synergy between a building, landscape, or even a product and its surroundings, to the benefit of both.

FIRST ASSIGNMENT

What we need to do is:

  • Go to any shopping complex and take a look at their information counter or kiosk.
  • Take pictures of both counters.
  • 36 degree pictures means in all directions (angle), from left to right.
  • Talk about the design, the facilities, and logo for the shopping complex.

That's what we've been asking to do:

And the result is, I decided to choose Lot 10. There's no special reason why am I chose this shopping complex.

The Lot 10 building
Picture 1.0

Picture 1.0 is the building of Lot 10 shopping complex which is situated within central Kuala Lumpur's new shopping complex and entertainment district. More information about Lot 10 can be found on this website Lot 10 Shopping Centre or just wiki it.

As you can see in the picture 1.0, Lot 10 has no specific logo for it's shopping complex. It only use those alphabets to create its own brand logo. Sometimes simple typeface makes a good logo and people can easily remember it. There are some examples for famous typeface logo we can seen anywhere such as Coca Cola, Nestle and etc. Those brands have their own typeface style and each one of it is unique where people can easily recognised it.

The logo

Picture 1.1
Logo:

Picture 1.1 is obviously the logo for Lot 10 Shopping Complex as you can see it made of alphabets. I think the Lot 10 logo has nothing to do with the company (shopping complex) same goes with the name "Lot 10". I think it is just something to represent the building itself. For my opinion, Lot 10 has a good and simple typeface logo although I think it has nothing exactly to do with the structure of the building or any shops inside it. The logo is just acts as the signature for the shopping complex so that people may easily remember and recognised it whenever they go to the shopping complex again. But then, I think it is a brilliant idea for the creator by choosing red colour for the logo as the building is green and it makes a good combination where it will gives a cons look for the building. As what I have learnt in secondary school, cons in any design is really important because it gives focus and attract attention.

Information Counter

Picture 1.2
Picture 1.3
Picture 1.4
Picture 1.5
Picture 1.6
Picture 1.7
Picture 1.8
Design:

All those pictures above (picture 1.2 until picture 1.8) are the 360 degree pictures for the information counter taken in 7 different angles at Lot 10 Shopping Complex. As you can see, the counter is in circle shape and made of metal (I guess). It has a simple design but I think an information counter does not really have to be too fancy as long as it can be seen from a distance and give a good service, that's better.

Facilities:

The facilities provided by the information counter are:

  • Flyers and brochures: You can see there's lot of  flyers and brochures placed on top of the counter. (Picture 1.7 and Picture 1.8)
  • Customer service: There's a customer service in the information counter whom you can ask for any direction to shops in the shopping complex in case if you are lost. (Picture 1.4)
  • Wheelchair service: In Lot 10 they also provide wheelchair service for those disable customers whom might need help. You can see that wheelchair in Picture 1.6 clearly.

I think there's lot more services that being provided by the Lot 10 information counter but what I have been stated above are those that I seen through that day when I gone to snap the counter's pictures.
